CBD and pain relief

Many people who suffer from pain are looking for alternatives to taking pain relief every day to avoid unwanted side effects. Instead, they are turning to natural alternatives to traditional drugs which can have nasty side effects.

CBD or cannabidiol is a chemical that occurs naturally in cannabis plants. It is not psychoactive so doesn’t produce a “high”, but is believed to have many benefits for a range of conditions. Let’s take a look at how it may be used to relieve different types of pain.

Arthritis

CBD is used by many sufferers of arthritis to help reduce swelling and relieve pain. A 2016 study carried out on rats found that a daily dose had long-lasting pain-relieving and anti-inflammatory effects. People who use CBD for pain relief can take it in the form of oral CBD tinctures and CBD edibles, or apply topical CBD directly onto the site of pain.

Headaches

Chronic headaches and migraines can be debilitating for many, but CBD may be a viable alternative to taking pills to treat them. While more research needs to be done specifically linking headache relief with CBD, there are some indications that CBD products can provide an alternative to addictive drugs such as opioids. A study in 2009 concluded that CBD could provide relief taken alongside analgesic (pain-relieving) drugs, or when it’s not an option to take opioids.

Chronic pain

If you’re unfortunate enough to suffer from chronic pain, you will be interested to know that CBD products are believed to ease its symptoms. A review carried out in 2018 concluded that CBD could provide a new, alternative therapy for chronic pain patients. It suggested that while more studies were needed to verify the link between CBD and pain relief, it could open up new therapies for anyone suffering from chronic pain.
